SNP slam Jim Murphy's "unbelievable hypocrisy"

Commenting on the speech by Shadow Defence Secretary Jim Murphy on Monday - in which he said a future Labour administration would subject the MoD budget to annual external review the SNP Westminster leader and Defence spokesperson Angus Robertson MP called for Labour to apologise over its role in the mismanagement of defence budgets.

Mr Robertson said: “This is unbelievable hypocrisy from Jim Murphy – a man whose party oversaw the loss of 10,000 defence jobs in Scotland, the destruction of the Scottish regiments, and contributed to a £5.6bn defence underspend in Scotland. Jim Murphy’s conference pledge to independent oversight of defence budgets looks completely cynical given Labour’s central role in mismanaging MoD budgets for more than a decade.

The last Labour government managed to overspend budgets while simultaneously leaving troops on the frontline without basic kit. Jim Murphy should show some humility and apologise for Labour’s woeful record on defence. It was after all Jim Murphy’s Labour government that even stopped the publication of defence statistics – because they revealed the extend of cuts to Scotland’s defence footprint by successive Westminster governments. With independence we can make better defence decisions in Scotland and not leave it to London."

The Politico Daily did contact Mr Murphy's office to give him a right to reply - they declined to comment.
