| UKIP MLA David McNarry |
Former Ulster Unionist Party MLA David McNarry has been unveiled as UKIP's first-ever MLA in a dramatic move that gives The United Kingdom Independence Party its first foothold in any of the UK’s devolved assemblies. The veteran politician, 64, who left the UUP in May and has now decided to join UKIP.
The UKIP leader Nigel Farage said the addition of the sitting Strangford member made the party "fully national". Mr Farage continued: "We extend a very warm welcome to David McNarry, a man of vast political experience," he said. "David's move shows that UKIP is now the only truly national party in the UK. One that cares as much about Belfast as it does Bristol, Devon as it does Dundee".
