Olly Neville had told the BBC that: "Pushing for gay marriage which is something I am a big supporter of is one of the few things I think this government is doing right. So I think theres definately a more social liberal side of Young Independents, I think thats a really good thing".
Lawrence Webb told the Politico Daily that: "He [Neville] was not sacked for his opinions on gay marriage but because he failed to articulate the party policy on gay marriage as a party spokesman. He can hold whatever views he likes on gay marriage and state them but not as a party officer and spokesman. As such he must abide by collective responsibility and state the party policy."
Another UKIP figure who didn't want to go on the record told me: "This was not his first time, and his case was not helped by releasing the Party Chairman's emails and private address to the internet, followed by interviews with the papers and Channel 4 news."
