Growth welcomed but recovery must be secured

Plaid Cymru, the party for Wales, has welcomed the announcement of an increase in GDP during the second quarter of 2013 but warned that the Welsh economy still needs to create better paid work to improve living standards. The party's shadow economy spokesperson Alun Ffred Jones called for investment in transport and social housing, and better public procurement to create well-paid jobs and a Welsh supply chain. The UK economy remains 3.3% below the peak of 2008 before the economic crisis. Unfortunately, no Welsh-only GDP figures are published to assess the performance of the Welsh economy.

Plaid Cymru shadow economy spokesperson Alun Ffred Jones AM said: "Plaid Cymru is hopeful that the Welsh economy is finally turning the corner, but there is still a great deal of work to be done in creating better paid work in Wales. Until wages are going up and there is an increase in living standards then there is no cause for celebration. Families are feeling the squeeze from bills going up faster than wages, making it difficult to make ends meet. Many of the jobs created recently have been at the lower end of the market, and more than 1 in 10 people in work in Wales are under-employed, either working fewer hours than they would like or in a job for which they are over-qualified."

Continuing Mr Jones said: "Plaid Cymru want to see investment in transport and social housing spending and for us to make use of public spending so that it goes to good small and medium sized companies who are based in Wales and invest in skills and the supply chain here. If done properly, we could create up to 50,000 jobs in Wales like this. We could have had a return to growth years ago if the parties in Westminster had followed Plaid Cymru’s advice and concentrated on jobs rather than making cuts which undermined the economy. With the three London-based parties all signed up to further weakening the economy through more cuts to vital services, it is more important than ever that Plaid Cymru are the party who will stand up for the people of Wales."
