Green Leader supports Bring Back Our Girls campaign

The Green Party Natalie Bennett has offered her support for the "Bring Back Our Girls" campaign, which is calling on the Nigerian government and the international community to do everything possible to rescue the 270 Nigerian girls kidnapped by Boko Hiram. More than Natalie Bennett commented: "I will be wearing a red ribbon today to acknowledge their plight and call for the inadequate response thus far to it to be remedied. Both the Nigerian government and the international community must do more."

Gunmen kidnapped the girls on April 15 and there's little information about their whereabouts. Ms Bennett added: "Just as the world has been sympathising with the pain of the relatives and friends of the lost Malaysian Airlines flight and of the victims of the Korean ferry disaster, it's important that we both acknowledge the suffering in Nigeria and do everything possible we can to bring the girls home safely." More than 400,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org calling for more effective action.

Yesterday the Prime Minister, David Cameron, spoke to President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria about the abduction of over 200 girls in Northern Nigeria. The Prime Minister expressed his shock at the attack and offered the United Kingdom's wholehearted support for the Nigerian people during this difficult time.

President Jonathan accepted the David Cameron's offer to send a small team of experts drawn from across Whitehall who could complement the US team committed by President Obama. Both leaders also said to have agreed that their respective governments should explore how to further strengthen co-operation on counter-terrorism in the longer term to prevent such attacks in the future.
