The announcement follows a motion, agreed upon at Lib Dem Conference, which saw her proposals, insisting those who work with children and vulnerable adults be required by law to report to the authorities if they have any suspicion that abuse is taking place, being made party policy. The consultation was announced in the House of Lords today by Home Office Minister Lord Bates.
Commenting Joan Walmsley said: "This is a major step forwards in the campaign to better protect the victims of child abuse. It will be an open and transparent process and give a voice to victims. Child abuse is abhorrent and can cause lasting physical, emotional and psychological damage to victims and their families."
Continuing Joan Walmsley said: "Inquiries have repeatedly found some professionals failing to report concerns about child protection, which has resulted in further abuse. This can't go on a minute longer. I realise that this might require extra resources but we should not be afraid to turn over a stone because of the slime we might find underneath."
