Cameron's Right to Buy is ‘strangling social housing’

Commenting today on the Communities & Local Government report on Right to Buy, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said it was ‘strangling social housing’.

The committee said that the Government’s extension of Right to Buy to housing association tenants, which was promised by the Prime Minister David Cameron at the 2015 election, should be funded by central government rather than a levy on local councils.

Commenting on the report, Tim Farron said: "The select committee has laid out the concerns that many of us have. Right to Buy is set to fail and this Government, yet again, is saying the right things and doing the wrong ones."

"The Government is not funding this scheme and are not making sure the homes are replaced, like for like, in the communities they are sold off in. The Government is slowly strangling the social housing sector." Mr Farron added.
