Labour leader Ed Miliband will today declare Britain needs a new economic settlement which meets the challenges of now and unites the country rather than divides it. His speech to the Scottish Labour Party conference will say Lady Thatcher came to power when it was clear the old ways did not work anymore and people were looking for a change of direction. He will compare that time to today when people are asking whether Britain can change direction again, away from some of the orthodoxies of the 1980s.
He will warn that both the Conservative Party and the Scottish National Party only offer more of the same old divisive solutions at a time when new answers are needed to new problems facing Britain. Mr Miliband will set out the terms of a new settlement which can unite the country: a One Nation agenda which includes concrete measures on banking, business, long term investment in jobs and tax, as well as a different course on welfare reform to ensure that people who can work do so.
His speech in Scotland will coincide with tonights broadcasting of Labour's local election broadcast. 'Made by the Many' tells the story of the people who make Britain work - the forgotten wealth creators, who get up, go to the office, learn, teach, build, make, buy and sell. The film, which airs on Friday evening, features people from all walks of life. They are not the most powerful or the wealthiest, but they are the people who keep our country running. When they do well, Britain does well.
The broadcast can be seen at 17:55 on BBC2, 18:25 on ITV1 and 18:55 on BBC1.
