6 in 10 say Ed Miliband 'does not come across as election winner'

The latest Index poll conducted by ComRes for ITV News reveals that six in ten (61%) Britons say that Ed Miliband does not come across as an election winner. Just 17% disagree, while 22% are not sure. Half (49%) of the British public believe that Labour would have a better chance of winning the next General Election without Ed Miliband as party leader. Only 19% disagree with this statement.

The factors most likely to make the British public see Ed Miliband in a positive light, are his opposition to military intervention in Syria (44%) and the same percentage perceives him positively after he spoke out against News International over the phone hacking scandal (44%). Britons are most likely to view Ed Miliband negatively on the basis of how he comes across on radio and TV - four in ten (42%) say this impacts their view of him in a negative way - and the way he has lead the Labour Party since 2010 (37%).

Nearly half of the population (45%) say Ed Miliband is not seen as being 'in control of the Labour Party', while only 28% say that he is in control. Furthermore, 48% disagree that overall, Ed Miliband is doing a good job as leader of the Labour Party. Four in ten (42%) agree that trade unions have too much influence over Miliband following the controversy over Labour's links with the unions, only one quarter (26%) disagree that they have too much influence.
